Poplar House

An infill house in one of Saskatoon’s oldest neighbourhoods.

Poplar House is an architectural sleeper; It’s dark exterior and traditional form conceal a bright and modern interior. Tasked with responding to its historical context, Poplar House takes cues from its surroundings in scale and proportion. Defined by an offset ridge line, the saltbox profile allows the overall massing to be less imposing, with a low roof line and traditional form. By setting the second floor over only a portion of the main, the design team found an opportunity for additional volume over the kitchen and a covered deck which is carved out of the traditional form. Setting back into its context with an unassuming monochromatic exterior, the house slowly unveils its bright and playful interior as you enter.
