Ma Faamii

Considered spaces to allow comfortable gatherings, play and meaningful exchanges with Elders and support workers.

Ma Faamii is a Métis child and family support facility located in the Riversdale commercial district of Saskatoon. A collaboration between Oxbow Architecture, David Fortin, and Metis Nation - Saskatchewan (MN-S), this facility provides wraparound services and integrated social support for Métis Citizens and families of the Western Region 2A.

The two interconnected floors provide space for Ma Faamii’s client focused approach and supports their wraparound services. Ma Faamii assesses client needs and works towards developing a support team, identifying a support plan, implementing the plan, and monitoring outcomes. This strategy has a great impact on the Nation’s most vulnerable citizens and families. The core team at Ma Faamii strives to improve social and economic conditions for Métis people, to work towards self determination and self-reliance, and improve the quality of standards of life for all Métis People.

Cultural references from traditional Métis design sensibilities are used throughout the building. Spaces were carefully considered to allow comfortable gatherings, children play spaces, social work, counselling, and Elders. The front desk makes reference to log cabin tectonics, the ceiling makes reference to traditional floral beadwork colours, and the elevator core and Elders’ door are constructed in a Hudson Bay/Red River Frame Fashion.
