Kinsmen House
A Lottery Home that redefines Lottery Homes.
In 2017 we had the opportunity to design a Lottery Home for the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon. The house was raffled off to raise money for the club and the many worthwhile charities they support. We approached this project with two primary objectives; first to support the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon in the invaluable work they do in our own community and secondly to engage in a discourse about architecture with the public. Traditionally, lottery homes in Saskatchewan, as in many places, are sprawling, suburban houses with a lot of bling and very little ingenuity. Kinsmen House, inversely, occupies a compact footprint on a narrow lot in an established neighbourhood. It prioritizes quality of space through proportion, volume, and composition to garner its appeal. By challenging the public’s perception of what a ‘dream home’ can be we were able to open a dialogue about architecture with the people of Saskatoon that elevated the ‘lottery home’ conversation and in turn helped inform our own practice.
