Kapasiwin Cabin

An intimate family cabin in the boreal forest.

Situated on the banks of Waskesiu Lake, Kapasiwin Cabin captures panoramic views of the lake and sky. It acts as a frame through which to observe nature and a base from which to explore Prince Albert National Park. Interior spaces are structured around a massive concrete wall which extends out into the landscape, grounding the cabin firmly in its context. The wall contains a fireplace, to gather around, and acts to separate the private spaces from common living areas. Its substantial presence asserts itself as an elemental form within the cabin’s interior - a form to be navigated around and through as well as carved into. The warmth of douglas fir envelops the interior of the cabin as its windows open it up to expansive views of the lake beyond with lateral glimpses of forest and sky. Exterior panels of weathering steel have begun to develop a warm red patina that will only become richer with the passage of time.
